PNG is compressed by reducing the number of colours it uses, so screenshots, logos and flat graphics shrink the most.

Which files can I compress?
Compression supports JPEG, PNG, WebP, and AVIF when the required browser codec is available.
How are PNG files compressed?
By reducing the number of colours in the image, which keeps the PNG file type and any transparency. Photographs may show banding, so WebP or AVIF can suit them better.
Will every result be smaller?
No. A source may already be efficiently encoded. Image Shed measures the result and reports it honestly.
Does compression change the file type?
Almost never. Each result keeps its source file type, with one exception: removing the background from a JPEG saves it as WebP, because JPEG cannot store transparency.
Can I compress a batch?
Yes. Start with up to 100 images at 50 MB per file. Advanced settings can raise the limit to 500.
